Featured Sight: Block Island Yoga
I wanted the web sight for Block Island Yoga to draw visitors in. I also wanted it to be a soothing experience. I had a lot to work with. Sue Littlefield, who has taught yoga year round on Block Island for 11 years and incorporates yoga and body-mind therapy into her private counseling practice, provided me with the meditative words which became the home page, highlighted ones are links to pages in the site. She also provided the beautiful images which are used throughout the site. I came up with a page layout for Sue to view and she wrote back to me: "I like it very much. I like the simplicity of it. I like the color, the balance, the white text........Go for it!" And so Block Island Yoga was online shortly thereafter and just in time for the release of Sue's Yoga CD, Tidal Flow.
Tidal Flow can be purchased online at Block Island Yoga. Sue recognized that it would be helpful for some people to have visuals of the yoga poses and so once you have the cd you can go back to Block Island Yoga and view photographs of the poses referred to on the CD. At Block Island Yoga you can also join the email list, read Sue's Bio, and check the current schedule of yoga classes.
Search Engine Optimization
So, you have a web site... But when you type in a keyword, perhaps your own name, your site dosn't come up in the search results. If you are experiencing this frustration you need to know about SEO, or Search Engine Optimization. In this article I will describe what SEO is and tell you a little about the SEO consultation services I will be offering shortly.
Wikipedia defines SEO as follows: “Search engine optimization (SEO) is the process of improving the volume and quality of traffic to a web site from search engines via “natural” (”organic” or “algorithmic”) search results. Usually, the earlier a site is presented in the search results, or the higher it "ranks", the more searchers will visit that site."
SEO, then, is about designing, writing, and creating a web site in effective ways that allow search engines, like Google, to see and understand the content. This, in turn, means that your web site will be included in the search results for similar content.
SEO, as you probably realize, is one of the most important things to consider in designing a web site, and from the very start of the process. In fact, while it is sometimes a relatively straightforward process to optimize a web site for search engine visibility, it is often wiser and less costly to redesign the web site using search engine "friendly" design and coding.
If you are interested in SEO with your site, read on to find out the services I will be offering very soon and read this article on Google, What's an SEO? Does Google recommend working with companies that offer to make my site Google-friendly? . In addition, you can watch a few short videos on You Tube featuring Google's Matt Cutts, such as this one: Google's Matt Cutts gives tips on SEO for 2008.
I am currently reading a new book, Search Engine Visibility, which teaches developers, designers, programmers, and online marketers what pitfalls to avoid from the beginning so they can provide their clients with more effective site designs. It includes up-to-date information on new developments such as blogs, video and podcasts, and web applications.
I have also been using Google Analytics with w3sights.com, my web site, and will be offering, very soon, a SEO consultation for clients' web sites. I will initially focus on Google and I will be able to inform you of how Google is currently ranking your web pages; I'll analyze your existing web pages and provide specific advice on how to make them more visible to all search engines; and together, we can identify 10 keywords for your site and look at how your site is positioned and can be improved for each of those keywords. In addition, I can be contracted to do the necessary work that is identified in the consultation, if desired. Contact me if you are interested in SEO for your web site!
Photo Blogging
A few weeks ago The Lakeville Journal, my local newspaper, had an article about a Sharon CT resident and photographer, Jenny Hansell, who has a Photo a Day blog. I immediately went to Jenny's blog, sharonctdailyphoto.blogspot.com, and enjoyed looking at her photos, all taken down the road from me; and then I went to a few of the other blogs linked to from hers and literally discovered a world of daily photo blogs!
Jenny started her blog on March 30, 2007, a little less than a year ago, and how she started it is revealed in both the article and on the Sharon Historical Society web site: "Hansell’s quest to explore Sharon in photographs began with a love affair with a very different place: Paris. While impatiently awaiting her departure on a 9-day trip to the City of Light, she discovered a website that provided her with a daily dose of Paris beauty: Parisdailyphoto.blogspot.com. With the inevitable letdown following her return, Hansell returned to the Paris photoblog, and soon noticed that other “daily photo” blogs were cropping up, all linked to the Paris blog. As Hansell notes in her artist statement, “I didn’t have to think twice: if Barcelona and Venice could have a photoblog, so could Sharon."
For those of you in this area, the Sharon Historical Society has an exhibit of Jenny's favorite photographs from the blog, "The Sharon Landscape: Selections from Sharon Daily Photo", running through March 28th. Also, on Sunday, March 2nd, at 3 pm Jenny is giving an illustrated talk on her photos and her experience as a photoblogger.
